TQ Source Tips and Tools: Emerging Strategies to Enhance Educator Quality
As education practitioners continue to explore reforms aimed at improving teacher and leadership quality, it is now necessary more than ever to draw upon available strategies and resources to enhance ongoing efforts. Strategies currently are available for the following topic areas, and new topic areas will be added periodically.
- Identifying and Supporting Highly Effective Teachers (2008)
This topic area presents key issues about identifying how highly effective leaders support teachers, and identifying professional contexts to support highly effective teachers. (New key issues for this topic area will be added by summer 2008.)
- Enhancing Leadership Quality (2007)
This topic area presents key issues about enhancing teacher leadership, improving the preparation of school and district leaders, and building the capacity of school leaders to support teachers.
- Improving Teacher Quality Through the Implementation of a Multitiered Intervention System (2007)
This topic area presents an overview document on teacher quality and multitiered interventions, and a key issue about improving student outcomes in general and special education with effective classroom management practices.
- Recruiting Quality Teachers for Mathematics, Science, and Special Education (2006)
This topic area presents key issues about recruiting mathematics and science teachers at the high school level and at the elementary and middle school levels; and recruiting mathematics, science, and special education teachers for urban and rural areas.
- Improving Teacher Quality in At-Risk Schools (2005)
This topic area presents key issues about performance-based pay; financial incentives; expanding the teaching pool; hiring and placement practices; teaching as a career with advancement and leadership opportunities; improving the working environment of teachers; induction and mentoring; recruiting minority teachers; and teacher preparation to teach in at-risk schools.
Each topic area is broken down into key issues. Each key issue includes the following:
- A scenario to set the context.
- A discussion of why the key issue is important to teacher and leadership quality in at-risk schools.
- Tips and cautions to keep in mind before implementing strategies.
- Strategies and resources, including scholarly literature and materials to support effective local- and state-level policymaking and implementation.
- A real-life example to see how strategies are being implemented in other areas.
